Connecting the linguist to industry and public institutions (pages 38-49)

This study aimed at disclosing language‐related problems lay people may have in a selection of professional contexts. The study also measured the level of concern over these problems and inquired about solutions to them. Eleven Norwegian companies/institutions participated in the study. This study has used ‘structured interview’ as the method. Interviews with two representatives of the management and two lower level employees of the same company have been conducted. The main finding was that understanding customers and colleagues (and being understood by them) was the main problem for most of the institutions. The study intends to strengthen the connection between what professional linguists do and what the lay language user feels we should do to solve real‐life language problems.
