Communication with Hostage Takers: Blame Schema as a Framework for Persuasion (pages 39-44)

A focus on non‐violent means for resolution of hostage taking incidents is suggested. Anderson's (1981; 1982) psychodynamics of everyday life provides detailed and operationalizable elements which are included in the schema: Blame = Culpa ⊕ Consequences. Guidelines for spokesmen of negotiating teams are proposed along with suggestions for research investigating the viability and effectiveness of this approach.
